Our latest Flash! Friday winner (for her 2nd time) is Allison Garcia.  Read her winning story here, then take one minute to get to know her better. (Read her first interview here.)

1) What about the prompt inspired your winning piece? I noticed nearly everyone was white except the cadaver, and I thought, “I bet that guy didn’t volunteer!”

2) Do you outline, or are you more of a discovery writer? Mostly a discovery writer, though I recently outlined for a book and it was super helpful!

3) How would you describe your writing style? I like to write in a way that creates emotions and connects to the reader. Mostly I write realistic fiction.

4) When did you begin writing fiction? As soon as I could hold a pencil. I just got back into it a few years ago.

5) Introduce us to a favorite character in one of your stories. Juanita and her three-year-old daughter nearly die crossing the border to escape the hands of her abusive husband.

6) What books have influenced your life the most? The Bible; The Giver; Animal, Vegetable, Miracle; Jane Eyre; Agatha Christie mysteries; Cuando Era Puertorriquena; and lots of classic literature.

7) What are you currently reading? Victim of Grace by Robin Jones Gunn. She’s my new hero!

8) How do you combat writer’s blockStarting an online write-in at SVW’s Facebook group and getting support from other writers.

9) What is the best writing advice you’ve ever been given? If writing is the gift God gave you, not writing is disobedience. It sure lit a fire under me!

10) What do you admire most about dragons? They can fly and breathe fire. That’s pretty cool. 🙂

1) What about the prompt inspired you to write your winning piece? It reminded me of Italy and the mountains, and I pictured all my senses but thought of sight last.

2) How long have you been writing flash? Two or three months.

3) What do you like about flash? If I don’t write anything else all week, at least I wrote something! Also, it’s fun reading other people’s stories.

4) What flash advice would you give other writers? Just try it out. It’s super fun!

5) Who is a writer we should follow, and why? I love Barbara Kingsolver. I also love classic literature. You can learn a lot from reading the greats!

6) Do you participate in other flash contests, and which? Nope. I am loyal to Rebekah. 🙂 Heehee.

7) What other forms do you write (novels, poetry, articles, etc)? I mostly write novels but am foraying a bit into short stories and penny fiction.

8) What is/are your favorite genre(s) to write, and why? Contemporary. Most recently I wrote some Latino/Chicano fiction, and it was awesomely fun!

9) Tell us about a WIP. Vivir El Dream: an undocumented college student deciding whether to stay in the shadows or stand up and fight.

10) How do you feel about dragons? Um… glad they don’t exist in our realm {Editor’s Note: THAT YOU KNOW OF}. Although Pete’s was okay.
