It was grandpapa’s story. Probably pilfered it. The twisted old buzzard descended on us every couple of years. I was ten that last time. He musta been ninety… looked like something even the mangiest cat wouldn’t drag in, snot dribbling, clothes reeking.

“Man of the road, bucko. Always will be. Know why?” he asked.

    “No,” I whimpered.

“Well, that Calcutta Cobra swished her slitheriness up outta that basket like a hoochie coochie dancer, looked me in my right eyeball, said, you settle down, son, you’re as good as dead.”

“Knew right then. A snake talks to you, you best listen.”

It rained hard that summer night I spent in the village at my grandmother’s house. The water stood ankle deep as I floated paper boats. Grandmother advised me to stay away from the old banyan tree, a pair of cobras resided in its roots. Sure enough one floated out as the water flooded its home.
Ramu, our servant, with a stick and bucket, soon had the King trapped. He sold it to the village snake charmer. My Grandmother wasn’t pleased.
A month later Ramu died due to snake bite.
“Never anger a woman,” Grandmother advised, “they never forget or forgive.”

I’m lagging behind on my nanowrimo word count and I have a creepy feeling I’m going to dream about snakes and snake charmers tonight. Not good. 🐍

The battle waged as it always had: the snakecharmer’s music against the cobra’s bite.
The players, moving with snake like grace, draw the Cobras to mirror their motions and the battle is joined. The mesmerizing effect draws the patrons in— but not to close, lest they break the spell and face the cobra’s wrath.
The players, for their part lead the dance as they have for centuries, but none have ever looked at it from the snake’s point of view.
For the snake simply wonders— what did that snake do to deserve such a punishment – humans blowing into it’s tail…

Status report – it’s been a long strange week (as NaNo tends to be) Yesterday I strived for a 7K day and ended up turning it into an 11K day. Today I’m paying for it with writer’s elbow. Life is good.
