Jacki Donnellan won our 2013 Flashversary contest, and now that we’re past the holidays, I’m delighted to share with you the first part of her interview. Read her winning story (along with the other Flashversary winning stories) here!

What about the prompt inspired your story?  A misty expanse of water and the head of a mythical creature was always going to lead me to the Loch Ness Monster, a myth which I have always loved. A lot of the speculation and “evidence” about Nessie suggests that she is a form of plesiosaur- an aquatic dinosaur- not an airborne, fire-breathing dragon. And then I thought, “But what if…?”

How long have you been writing flash? About eight months.

What do you like about writing flash? I really enjoy the craft of choosing and positioning a small numbers of words so that they tell a much bigger story.

What flash advice would you give other writers?  Just do it! I don’t feel qualified to say more!

Who is a writer we should follow, and why? Too hard to pick just one! It’s truly amazing how many fantastic, not-yet-famous authors there are out there- just look at the formidable quality of writing submitted to Flash! Friday each week!

Do you participate in other flash contests? Have you won other writing awards or had pieces published? I’ve joined in with Cara Michael’s Race the Date a couple of times and was very happy to get an HM each time.

I’ve had a few 75-word stories published on Paragraph Planet (great site to submit to!) as well as some flash and a short story published on CafeLit.Co.uk and a piece of flash included in Opening Line’s ‘Otherness’ issue.

What other forms do you write? Longer short stories, and a bit of poetry. I also like to vss on Twitter – a story in less than 140 characters is the ultimate flash challenge! Check out {hashtag}ThePush- anyone can play, and there’s a different theme each day!

What is/are your favorite genre(s) to write, and why? Slice-of-life seems to come most easily to me, but I’m trying very hard to spread my wings a little!

Tell us about a WIP. Something called “Wedding Breakfast Seeds,” which is a novella told by way of a mix of chapters and short stories.

How do you feel about dragons? I love that they have existed from age to age without needing to change to enthrall each new generation.
